Coordinated motion of active filaments on spherical surfaces

چکیده
The coordinated motion of active filaments, most notably cilia and flagella, are used by numerous micoorganisms swimming cells to facilitate swimming. This Letter explores how the states filaments depend on topology surface which they attached, as well whether is held fixed or free move. Most notably, demonstrates that for spherical surfaces, state changes dramatically when sphere released due defect-induced alterations in filament motion.

Wrinkling crystallography on spherical surfaces.
We present the results of an experimental investigation on the crystallography of the dimpled patterns obtained through wrinkling of a curved elastic system. Our macroscopic samples comprise a thin hemispherical shell bound to an equally curved compliant substrate. Under compression, a crystalline pattern of dimples self-organizes on the surface of the shell. Stresses are relaxed by both out-of...
متن کاملOn the motion of slender vortex filaments
Several approaches for slender vortex motion ~the local induction equation, the Klein–Majda equation, and the Klein–Knio equation! are compared on a specific example of sideband instability of Kelvin waves on a vortex. Numerical experiments on this model problem indicate that all these equations yield qualitatively similar behavior, and this behavior is different from the behavior of a nonslend...
متن کاملClose packing of rods on spherical surfaces.
We study the optimal packing of short, hard spherocylinders confined to lie tangential to a spherical surface, using simulated annealing and molecular dynamics simulations. For clusters of up to twelve particles, we map out the changes in the geometry of the closest-packed configuration as a function of the aspect ratio L/D, where L is the cylinder length and D the diameter of the rods. We find...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional Crystallisation on Spherical Surfaces
We report results of a computational study on 2D crystallisation for a 25-particle Lennard-Jones system on a spherical surface, as a function of radius. The energy is minimised using simulated annealing and steepest descent methods. Different crystalline arrangements with clear energy minima are found at different radii. Qualitatively, most of the observed phenomena are representative also for ...
متن کاملGrowing an actin gel on spherical surfaces.
Inspired by the motility of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, we have experimentally studied the growth of an actin gel around spherical beads grafted with ActA, a protein known to be the promoter of bacteria movement. On ActA-grafted beads F-actin is formed in a spherical manner, whereas on the bacteria a "comet-like" tail of F-actin is produced. We show experimentally that the stationary t...
